One of the easiest and fastest ways to share files between computers running on Windows 10 is using the HomeGroups feature. The HomeGroups were introduced with Windows 7, which has proven very useful among users looking for a simple way to share files between computers. This guide will show you how to share files between PCs in Windows 10.
How to share files between PCs in Windows 10
To set up and manage the Homegroups in Windows 10, type “Homegroup” into the search box in the Start menu or go to Start → Control Panel → HomeGroup.
How to create a HomeGroup?
The HomeGroup control panel will check the network you’re connected to and if the HomeGroup is already created for that network. If yes, you will be invited to join this group—more on this below.
If HomeGroup is not created, click Create a Homegroup and Next. Then select what you would like to share with other members who will be in the HomeGroup. Then click next. Write the password for HomeGroup because other users will also have to enter it if they want to access the group. The generated password is not easy to remember, but we will show you below how you can change it.
How do I access HomeGroup on another computer?
If a HomeGroup is already installed on your network, you will be notified, and the “Join now” button will be presented to you. Click on the button and follow the wizard that works on the same principle described earlier in the text. If prompted, enter the password to access the group.
How to look at the files that are shared in the HomeGroup?
On your desktop, click This PC. On the left side of the window, you will see a Homegroup and users currently in that group. Click on the name to view the files that the user shares presently.
How to change the HomeGroup settings
You can change the HomeGroup settings in the Control Panel. Open Start → Control Panel → HomeGroup. There you change what you share, the password, etc.
Sharing files between computers is very simple; right-click on the file you want to share → → Share with Homegroup (view & edit).
